How can we move beyond goals and resolutions this new year?
The new year is often a time for reflection and setting goals. We make resolutions, set ambitious targets, and create detailed plans for the year ahead.
While these approaches can be motivating, they can also put a lot of pressure on us and leave us feeling disappointed if we don’t achieve everything we set out to do.
This year, I encourage you to shift your focus from goals and resolutions to intentions. Instead of focusing on what you want to achieve, focus on the feeling you want the year ahead to hold. What kind of energy do you want to cultivate? What kind of experiences do you want to have?
For example, instead of setting a goal to “lose 20 pounds,” you might set an intention to “feel strong and healthy.” Instead of resolving to “write a novel,” you might intend to “cultivate creativity and flow.”
The power of rituals and ceremonies
One way to set intentions for the new year is to create a new year ritual or ceremony. This could be something as simple as lighting a candle and taking a few deep breaths, or something more elaborate, like creating a vision board or writing a letter to your future self.
The key to a powerful ritual is that it helps you to connect with your inner wisdom and set a clear intention for the year ahead. It doesn’t have to be done at a specific time or place, and it can be as unique and personal as you want it to be.
New Year Ritual Ideas
- Create a vision board: Collect images and words that represent the feeling you want to cultivate in the year ahead.
- Write a letter to your future self: Write a letter to yourself about your hopes and dreams for the year ahead. Seal the letter in an envelope and open it at the end of the year.
- Spend time in nature: Go for a walk in the woods, sit by a lake, or simply spend some time in your garden. Connect with the natural world and allow yourself to feel grounded and centered.
- Meditate or practice mindfulness: Take some time each day to sit quietly and connect with your inner self.

Remember, the most important thing is to focus on what you need and your intention for the year ahead. Don’t worry about what you’re supposed to do or what everyone else is doing. Trust your intuition and create a ritual that feels right for you.
Happy New Year!
