Calming Rituals for Anxious Times

In times of collective uncertainty and political unrest, what are some calming rituals that can support us during these anxious times?

During challenging times, we often find ourselves seeking anchor points – practices that can help us feel steady when the ground beneath us seems to shift. The ancient human practice of ritual, both personal and communal, offers us valuable tools for processing difficult experiences and finding our centre.

The Power of Personal Rituals

Our nervous systems respond powerfully to repetitive, mindful actions. Personal rituals – whether lighting a candle each morning, taking a contemplative walk, or creating a dedicated space for reflection – can serve as reliable touchstones when we feel overwhelmed.

These practices work by engaging our senses and creating predictable patterns that signal safety to our bodies. Consider developing rituals that involve:

Physical grounding practices: Walking barefoot on earth, sitting with your back against a tree, or simply feeling the weight of your body supported by the ground beneath you.

These tactile experiences help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, our body’s natural calming mechanism.

Sacred pause points: Creating intentional moments throughout your day to check in with yourself.

This might mean taking three deep breaths before entering your workspace, or pausing to feel the warmth of your morning tea cup against your palms.

Sensory anchors: Using specific scents, sounds, or objects that help you feel present and centered.

Perhaps it’s the smell of lavender, the sound of a singing bowl, or holding a smooth stone that’s meaningful to you.

The Healing Power of Gathering

While personal practices are vital, there’s profound medicine in coming together as communities during difficult times. Shared ritual spaces allow us to:

  • Witness each other’s experiences without trying to fix or change them
  • Remember that we’re not alone in our feelings of uncertainty or grief
  • Access collective wisdom and support
  • Create containers for processing complex emotions
  • Build resilience through connection

Join myself and Quanita Roberson for a free community gathering, Bridging the Divide ~ A Call to Gather. We’ll be creating a ceremonial container to hold space for Canadians and Americans who are feeling so many things right now.

During our time together, we’ll create space where people can share honestly about their experiences without judgment or advice-giving. Simply being heard and seeing others nod in recognition can be deeply healing.

Supporting Our Collective Nervous System

When we gather in intentional ways, we help regulate not just our own nervous systems but our collective nervous system. Research shows that humans are deeply impacted by the emotional states of those around us. By creating spaces where we can find calm together, we contribute to the wellbeing of our broader community.

Some practices for collective regulation:

Synchronized breathing: Simple group breathing exercises can help align and calm multiple nervous systems at once.

Holding silence together: Creating spaces of shared quiet can be deeply regulating, allowing us to feel supported in stillness.

Collective expression: Whether through song, movement, or art, creating together helps process emotions that might feel too big to hold alone.

The Gift of Intentional Ritual

In times of uncertainty, ritual offers us both an anchor and a vessel – somewhere to ground ourselves and something to hold what we’re experiencing. By engaging in both personal and communal practices, we strengthen our capacity to navigate challenging times while remaining connected to ourselves and each other.

Remember that the goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety or difficult emotions, but to create containers that help us move through them with more support and resources. Through consistent ritual practice, we can build greater resilience, both individually and collectively, allowing us to face uncertainty with more steadiness and grace.

As we continue to navigate these complex times, may we remember the wisdom of gathering, the power of intentional practice, and the profound support available when we create space to witness and hold each other’s experiences.
