How can you honour and acknowledge the summer solstice on your own time? Start by letting go of time pressure and ritual expectations and allow the rituals to unfold naturally (and on their own timeline).
Here in North Vancouver, the days are gloriously long, and the sun, when it appears, feels like a warm embrace. Yet, as the calendar flips to June 20th, marking the Summer Solstice, I’m reminded that the official start of summer doesn’t always align with our personal experience. Perhaps you’re still battling unseasonably cool weather, or maybe life’s demands have simply overshadowed the celestial clock.
This year, I’m drawn to the concept of kairos time – a moment of unscheduled, qualitative time, as opposed to chronos time, which is linear, chronological time.
The Summer Solstice, while a fixed point on the chronos calendar, offers us an invitation into kairos. It’s not about when we acknowledge it, but how we choose to mark the turning of the seasons, imbued with our own intention and meaning.
The concepts of Chronos time and Kairos time offer a beautiful lens through which to view seasonal acknowledgments, especially for something like the Summer Solstice.
Chronos Time: This is the linear, measurable time we typically live by. It’s the ticking of the clock, the days on a calendar, the progression of seasons year after year. The Summer Solstice on June 20th is a perfect example of chronos time – a precise, astronomically determined moment. For many, acknowledging it on this specific date feels right, a way to align with the rhythms of the earth as defined by universal measurements.
Kairos Time: In contrast, kairos time is about the opportune moment, the qualitative “right time” rather than a quantitative measurement. It’s about significance, meaning, and a sense of readiness. When it comes to acknowledging dates like the Summer Solstice, kairos time invites us to:
- Go beyond the calendar: While the solstice is on June 20th, it might not feel like summer where you are. Perhaps you’re experiencing a late spring, or the true warmth and longest days only arrive a week or two later in your specific location. Kairos time suggests that the “right” moment to acknowledge summer’s arrival is when it genuinely feels like it, when the energy of the season truly resonates with you.
- Embrace personal resonance: For some, the solstice is a powerful time of reflection and intention-setting, regardless of the weather. For others, that deep connection might come when they finally have a free afternoon to spend outdoors, or when the first perfect, ripe berries appear at the market. Kairos time empowers you to create your own “solstice” when it holds the most meaning for you.
- Focus on intention over obligation: Chronos time can sometimes lead to a feeling of obligation – “I should do something for the solstice because it’s the date.” Kairos time shifts this to intention – “I want to connect with the energy of summer, and this is the perfect moment for me to do so.” This allows for more authentic and less forced rituals.
- Acknowledge the qualitative shift: The transition from spring to summer isn’t just a date; it’s a feeling of abundance, warmth, light, and growth. Kairos time encourages us to pay attention to these qualitative shifts within ourselves and our environment, and to honor them when they feel most potent.
In essence:
- Chronos provides the fixed marker: “The Summer Solstice is on June 20th.”
- Kairos invites the personal response: “It finally feels like summer today, I’m going to celebrate my own solstice now.”
By understanding this distinction, we free ourselves from the rigid demands of the clock and calendar and open up to a more personal, meaningful, and intuitive way of connecting with the natural cycles of the year. It allows for a more fluid and integrated experience of the seasons, honoring both the universal turning of the wheel and our unique, individual journey within it.
You don’t need a formal ceremony or a meticulously planned event to honour the longest day. The beauty lies in small, simple rituals that connect you to the essence of summer, whenever it feels right to you. Here are a few ideas to spark your own personal midsummer acknowledgment:
Simple Rituals for Your Timeless Summer Season:
- The First Sip of Summer: When you truly feel summer arriving – perhaps it’s the first time you leave the house without a jacket, or the first evening you spend lingering outdoors without a chill – make a special drink. It could be homemade lemonade, a refreshing iced tea, or a crisp glass of your favourite rosé. Sip it slowly, consciously acknowledging the warmth and the longer days.
- A Basket of Abundance: Take a moment to gather some of the season’s first offerings. This could be a handful of strawberries from your garden, a vibrant bouquet of flowers from a local market, or even just a particularly juicy peach. Place them in a bowl or a basket on your table, a tangible reminder of summer’s generous spirit.
- Sun Salutation (Your Way): You don’t need to be a yogi to salute the sun. Simply step outside at sunrise or sunset (or even just during the brightest part of your day). Close your eyes, turn your face towards the sun, and feel its warmth on your skin. Take a few deep breaths, expressing gratitude for the light and energy it provides.
- The Scent of Summer: Choose an essential oil that evokes summer for you – perhaps citrus, lavender, or a floral blend. Diffuse it in your home, or put a drop on your pulse points. Let the aroma transport you to warm breezes and sun-drenched days.
- Water Blessing: Dip your hands into a natural body of water – the ocean, a lake, a stream, or even a bowl of water in your garden. As you do, set an intention for your summer season. What do you hope to cultivate, experience, or release in the coming months?
- Barefoot Grounding: Find a patch of grass, sand, or earth and kick off your shoes. Feel the texture beneath your feet, connecting directly with the earth. This simple act can be incredibly grounding and help you feel more present in the season.
- A Summer Song: Create a short playlist of songs that embody the feeling of summer for you. Listen to it intentionally, allowing the music to lift your spirits and set the tone for your personal summer journey.
Remember, these are just starting points. Our Summer Solstice ceremony is currently free in the Be Ceremonial app so you can draw inspiration from dozens of rituals we’ve curated for you. Create a ceremony that is personal and meaningful ~ and on your own timeline.
The most powerful rituals are the ones you create yourself, infused with your unique meaning. This summer, give yourself permission to acknowledge the season on your own terms, in your own time, and in a way that truly resonates with your soul. The solstice may pass, but the spirit of summer is yours to embrace whenever you’re ready.
