A crone is often associated with a woman beyond childbearing years who has gone through menopause. A crone can also represent a state of mind, and should not be limited by traditional definitions.
Crone comes from the word ‘cronus’, meaning time, and ‘crown’, referring to the wisdom that emanates from one’s head. Crones were frequently leaders, midwives, and healers in their communities. In medieval times, the crone was transformed into the witch archetype, changing the sentiment from a compliment to an insult. The crone became synonymous with something negative and fearful, and that narrative is still prevalent in our culture.
