This powerful conversation between Megan Sheldon and Eli Lawliet sheds light on the importance of rituals surrounding our gender identity. Gender rituals offer powerful tools for marking, celebrating, and processing gender transitions and explorations.
Eli shares his gender transition story and the lack of rituals he had access to. This catalyzed him to creating rituals for others as they seek to reclaim their gender identity and move through times of transition with attention and intention.
While many cultures have established rituals for various life passages, modern society often lacks formal recognition for gender journeys. This absence can leave individuals navigating these profound experiences without adequate communal support or emotional anchoring.
Gender rituals include naming ceremonies, wardrobe transformations, hormone initiation rituals, community affirmations, or milestone celebrations. These practices acknowledge the significance of gender journeys and create meaningful containers for emotional experiences that might otherwise feel overwhelming or invisible.
Eli Lawliet, Ph.D., (he/him) is the dreamer and weaver of The Gender Doula. In addition to a decade of experience researching trans healthcare, law, policy, and history, he has formal training as a full spectrum doula, breath work facilitator, and tarot reader, as well as many years of surviving the world of poverty wages and retail work.
Eli has pioneered work in the gender identity space, emphasizing how intentional rituals can provide psychological containment, emotional processing, and community validation during gender exploration and transition. Just as birth doulas guide individuals through pregnancy and childbirth, gender doulas help facilitate meaningful gender journeys.
